Double down under delight for Luke as WorldSSP season begins at Phillip Island
Luke Power kickstarted his 2025 FIM Supersport World Championship campaign in style at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit at the weekend, racing to P12, his best dry weather result on Saturday before going one better (P11), much to the delight of the home crowd on Sunday. The results were the first back-to-back world championship points race finishes for the Aussie.
Power, who remains with the Motozoo ME AIR MV Agusta squad this year lapped solidly in the official practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday before taking part in the Australian round media event on Wednesday.
A crash early into Free Practice on Friday morning resulted in an anxious wait as Luke underwent a series of medical evaluations to assess if he would be able to continue in the event. Thankfully, despite an injury to his left shoulder, the determined #68 fought through the pain to secure P17 on the grid ahead of the two nineteen lap races.
An aggressive opening lap in Saturday’s first encounter immediately saw Luke running inside the top fifteen. A rapid pit stop by the team enabled him to gain places and after a consistent end to the race he crossed the line an impressive twelfth.
It was a similar story on Sunday with Power once again fighting for the points from lights out to the flag. The team, as they had done the day before, perfectly executed the mandatory pit stop allowing Luke to gain places once again. He finished eleventh, adding five more world championship points on Sunday to the four he had secured on Saturday.
Luke heads back to Europe confident of another two strong races when the series resumes at the Portimão circuit for round two at the end of March.
Luke Power:
“Overall it was a positive weekend and a positive start to this year’s world championship. A big crash that left me injured wasn’t the ideal way to start but we did a good job given the circumstances when it came to Superpole and the races. I managed to claw my way back to P12 on Saturday and P11 on Sunday which are my two best results in the dry to date in the world championship. I want to thank the team for all their hard work not just in repairing the bike after the crash but for doing such a great job in the pit stops. We recorded the third best time which shows how well we are all working together. I want to thank all the medical staff that got me in a condition that meant I could race. The fans trackside were amazing and it was so nice to see my merchandise in the paddock being worn by fans. I will now spend the weeks before Portimão in March making sure I am fully fit for the first European race of the season. Thanks again to everyone supporting me – it means a lot.”
